What Are N2 Nitro Chargers?

An N2 nitro charger is a small steel canister filled with pure nitrogen gas (N2, E941) under pressure. You fit it into a nitro dispenser to push nitrogen into a cold drink. The gas breaks into very fine bubbles, which gives the drink a soft, velvety texture and a fine foam head, with no milk, sugar or fizz added.

This is different to a normal cream charger. A cream charger holds nitrous oxide (N2O), which dissolves into fat and makes cream thick and fluffy. Nitrogen barely dissolves in liquid at all, so instead of adding bulk, it changes the texture and creates the slow, cascading pour you see in a well-made nitro coffee or stout.

How to Choose Your N2 Nitro Chargers

  • Check your dispenser first. N2 chargers only work in a nitro-ready whipper. They will not fit a standard cream whipper or soda siphon. iSi nitro chargers, for example, are built for the iSi Nitro Whip specifically.
  • Check the gas weight. The two common sizes are 2.2g (Liss) and 2.4g (iSi). A slightly heavier charge can treat a bit more liquid or give a denser head.
  • Work out your usage. One charger usually treats around 0.5 to 1 litre of drink, depending on the brand and how much foam you want.
  • Match the pack to how often you serve. A 10-pack suits home use or trying out a new drink. A 120-pack or bulk case suits a café or bar serving nitro drinks all day.
  • Look for electronic weight-checking. Better chargers, such as iSi, are weighed one by one during filling, so each one gives a consistent result.

Key Features

  • Pure, food-grade nitrogen (N2, E941)
  • Tasteless and leaves no residue, so it changes texture, not flavour
  • Creates the cascading pour and fine, creamy foam head
  • Common sizes: 2.2g (Liss) and 2.4g (iSi)
  • Made from steel that can be recycled once empty
  • Needs a nitro-ready dispenser, not a standard cream whipper
  • Sold to over-18s only

What You Can Make With N2 Nitro Chargers

  • Nitro cold brew coffee. Cold brew infused with nitrogen becomes sweeter, smoother and less acidic, with a head similar to a stout. Nitrogen also pushes out oxygen, so the coffee keeps its fresh flavour for longer and can be made ahead of service.
  • Nitro beer and stout. Charge your favourite stout or ale to get a creamy, cascading pour at home or behind the bar.
  • Nitro cocktails. Add a smooth, velvety texture to a drink, such as a nitro espresso martini.
  • Rapid infusions. Nitrogen pushes into aromatics under pressure, then pulls the flavour back out when released, giving you fast infusions like cinnamon brandy, dill vodka or sloe gin in minutes.
  • Savoury foams and espumas. Nitrogen does not react with delicate proteins or acidic ingredients, so it works well for bone broth, herb or savoury foams where you want the real flavour to come through.

How to Use N2 Nitro Chargers

  • Pour your cold drink (cold brew, stout or a cocktail base) into a nitro-ready dispenser.
  • Screw the head on tightly so it doesn't leak.
  • Insert one N2 charger into the holder and twist to release the gas.
  • Shake well to mix the nitrogen through the liquid.
  • Dispense into a cup or glass. The fast pour whips the nitrogen in and builds the foam.
  • Serve straight away for the smooth, cascading finish.

FAQs

What is the difference between N2 and N2O chargers?

N2 chargers hold pure nitrogen, used for nitro drinks like cold brew, stout and cocktails. N2O chargers hold nitrous oxide, used to whip cream. Nitrogen gives a smooth texture and foam head. Nitrous oxide gives cream thick volume.

Can I use N2 nitro chargers in a normal cream whipper?

No. N2 chargers are made for a nitro-ready dispenser, such as the iSi Nitro Whip. They won't work properly in a standard cream whipper or soda siphon.

Can I use a cream charger (N2O) to make nitro coffee?

No. Only pure nitrogen gives the smooth, cascading nitro effect. Nitrous oxide is made for cream and won't produce the same result.

Does nitrogen change the taste of my drink?

No. The nitrogen is tasteless and leaves no residue. It changes the texture and mouthfeel, not the flavour.

How many drinks does one charger make?

As a guide, one charger treats about 0.5 to 1 litre of liquid, depending on the brand and how much foam you're after.

How long does the nitro foam last?

The fine foam head lasts several minutes, especially with a well-chilled drink, and the smooth feel carries through to the last sip.

Are N2 nitro chargers recyclable?

Yes. Once empty, the steel canisters can go out with your usual metal recycling.

Do I need to be 18 to buy them?

Yes. N2 nitro chargers are age-restricted and sold to customers aged 18 and over.
