What Is SmartWhip? Sizes, Uses & UK Rules Explained

SmartWhip is a UK brand of large food-grade nitrous oxide (N2O) cylinders used to make whipped cream and culinary foams. One 640g SmartWhip cylinder holds roughly the same amount of gas as 80 standard 8g cream chargers. It connects to a cream whipper through a nozzle or pressure regulator and is sold for catering use only. We stock genuine 640g cylinders in our SmartWhip UK range.

What is SmartWhip used for?
SmartWhip is used in professional and home kitchens to charge cream whippers with nitrous oxide. The gas dissolves into the fat in cream and expands as the cream is dispensed, giving light, stable whipped cream in seconds.
Common culinary uses include:
- Whipped cream for desserts, hot drinks, milkshakes and pastries
- Espumas and savoury foams, such as parmesan, potato or hollandaise foams
- Mousses made quickly without folding or long whisking
- Rapid infusions, where pressure pushes flavour from herbs, fruit or spices into spirits, oils or syrups in minutes rather than days (see why commercial kitchens use advanced infusion)
Cafés, dessert bars, restaurants and caterers choose SmartWhip because one cylinder replaces dozens of small chargers, which saves time during busy service and reduces packaging waste.
What’s inside a SmartWhip cylinder?
A SmartWhip cylinder contains food-grade nitrous oxide (N2O), approved in the UK and EU as food additive E942. It is the same gas found in standard whipped cream chargers, just in a much larger, refillable-style steel cylinder format.
N2O is used for cream because it dissolves well in fat and does not add a sour or fizzy taste.
SmartWhip does not contain CO2 and should not be used with CO2 chargers. Carbon dioxide is used for soda siphons and carbonated drinks. In cream, it creates a sharp, acidic taste and a poor texture.
SmartWhip sizes
The size you will see most often in the UK is the 640g cylinder. It holds about the same amount of gas as 80 standard 8g cream chargers. That suits cafés, dessert shops, small caterers and events, and it is easy to move and store.
Rapid Cream currently stocks two 640g SmartWhip cylinders: the Smartwhip Original 640g Steel Cylinder and Smartwhip Silver 640g. See the full SmartWhip collection.
If you only use a few chargers a week, standard 8g cream chargers may be more practical, or 8g chargers in bulk for regular use. If you get through a box or more a day, a SmartWhip cylinder is usually faster and cheaper per gram. Compare other brands in our 200g–670g cylinders and N2O cylinders ranges.
How does SmartWhip work?
A SmartWhip cylinder does not go inside the whipper. Instead, it releases gas into the whipper through a nozzle, hose or pressure regulator.
How to use SmartWhip with a cream whipper:
- Fill the whipper. Pour cold double or whipping cream (and any sugar or flavouring) into your cream whipper. Do not go past the max fill line.
- Seal the head. Screw the whipper head on firmly and check the seal is seated correctly.
- Attach the nozzle or regulator. Screw the supplied nozzle or a compatible pressure regulator onto the SmartWhip cylinder, then connect it to the whipper’s gas inlet using the correct adapter.
- Charge the whipper. Open the valve slowly to release gas into the whipper. A 500ml whipper usually needs the equivalent of one 8g charger; a 1L whipper, two. A regulator makes this easier to control.
- Close and disconnect. Close the valve fully before disconnecting the hose or nozzle.
- Shake and dispense. Shake the whipper 5 to 10 times, turn it upside down and dispense.
Tip: Keep cream and whipper cold. Warm cream holds less gas and gives runny results.
SmartWhip vs 8g cream chargers: which should you buy?
| SmartWhip (640g) | 8g cream chargers | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Fast refills from one cylinder | Change a charger every fill |
| Cost per gram | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Waste | One recyclable cylinder | Many small steel cartridges |
| Extra kit needed | Nozzle or regulator and adapter | None; fits standard whipper holder |
| Best for | Busy cafés, restaurants, caterers | Home use, low-volume kitchens |
Our recommendation: if you only fill a whipper occasionally, stick with 8g chargers. If you get through a box or more a day, SmartWhip usually saves money and time.
What equipment do you need?
To use SmartWhip you need:
- A cream whipper, such as a 250ml cream whipper or 1L cream whipper
- The SmartWhip nozzle (included with the cylinder) or a pressure regulator for more precise control
- A hose or adapter that fits your whipper’s charger inlet
- Spare seals and a cleaning brush for regular whipper maintenance
Is SmartWhip legal in the UK?
Yes. SmartWhip is legal to buy and use for food and catering. Since 8 November 2023, nitrous oxide has been a Class C drug, so it is only illegal to hold it if you intend to inhale it, or to supply it to someone who will.

Health risks of misusing nitrous oxide

- Loss of consciousness and suffocation, especially when inhaled in an enclosed space or from a bag
- Cold burns to the mouth, throat and lungs if inhaled directly from a cylinder
- Accidents and falls caused by dizziness
- Death, which has been recorded in the UK

How to store and dispose of SmartWhip cylinders safely
Store and handle cylinders as pressurised gas containers:
- Keep them upright in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.
- Keep them below 50°C and away from direct sunlight, ovens, hobs and other heat sources.
- Do not puncture, crush or drop cylinders.
- Secure them during transport so they cannot roll.
- Keep them out of reach of children.
- Close the valve and remove the nozzle when not in use.
- Recycle empty cylinders at a household waste and recycling centre or scrap metal facility. Make sure the cylinder is fully empty first. Read our full guide on how to dispose of N2O canisters safely.

Frequently asked questions
Is SmartWhip illegal in the UK?
No. SmartWhip is legal to buy and possess for catering. Since 8 November 2023, nitrous oxide is a Class C drug, so possessing it with the intent to inhale it is illegal.
What is SmartWhip used for?
SmartWhip is used to charge cream whippers with nitrous oxide to make whipped cream, culinary foams, mousses and quick infusions in cafés, restaurants and kitchens.
How many 8g chargers is a 640g SmartWhip?
A 640g SmartWhip holds about the same gas as 80 standard 8g cream chargers.
Is SmartWhip the same as laughing gas?
SmartWhip contains nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas. SmartWhip is sold as food-grade N2O for culinary use. Inhaling it is dangerous and illegal in the UK.
Do you need a regulator to use SmartWhip?
Not always. SmartWhip cylinders come with a nozzle that can fill a whipper. A pressure regulator gives more precise control and is recommended for busy kitchens.
Can you use SmartWhip with CO2?
No. SmartWhip contains only nitrous oxide. CO2 chargers are for soda siphons and carbonated drinks, and would give whipped cream a sour taste.
How long does a SmartWhip cylinder last?
A 640g cylinder can charge roughly 80 × 500ml whipper loads. How long that lasts depends on how much cream you serve each day.
Who can buy SmartWhip in the UK?
Adults buying it for catering or food preparation.
Summary
SmartWhip is a brand of large food-grade nitrous oxide cylinders, not a cream whipper. The 640g cylinder replaces dozens of 8g chargers, and connects to your whipper through a nozzle or regulator. It is legal for catering use in the UK, but inhaling nitrous oxide is illegal and harmful. For busy kitchens, SmartWhip is a faster, lower-waste alternative to small chargers.
